External Engagement and Global Division
Global Exeter
In an interconnected world, Global Exeter provides the University’s link to the global community supporting internationalisation at home and abroad.
Made up of two teams we work together to support inbound and outbound student mobility (Global Opportunities) and developing and maintaining links with our partner academic institutions (Global Partnerships) to support research and education objectives in line with the Global Strategy.
Study Abroad (Global Opportunities)
The Global Exeter team delivers excellent mobility experiences for students coming from and to our campuses.
The team oversees the creation of study abroad opportunities ranging from semester, yearlong short term and summer school placements.
We work with colleagues across all faculties and services, as well as global HEIs and external partner organisations to provide our students with semester and yearlong placements for study abroad, volunteer opportunities, short programmes, and summer schools.
This wide range is a deliberate element of our strategy which intends to provide an opening for every student who wishes to go abroad, whether as a compulsory part of their degree or as an opportunity to improve their employability prospects through gaining new skills and enhancing their intercultural understanding.
The long-term benefits for our students and the institution include a noticeable enhancement to employability and career planning; we have evidence that students who take part in a period of outbound mobility increase their progress in career planning by over 20% compared to those who stay in Exeter. We also have evidence that students return to Exeter with an increased range of soft skills, including problem solving, enhanced cultural competencies, language skills and decision making. We then support students to articulate these skills into tangible CV and interview content, so that they enter the labour market as truly global graduates.
We work with colleagues across all Faculties and services, as well as global HEIs to recruit inbound study abroad students to our campuses for semester one, two and full year mobility as part of our reciprocal exchange partnerships.
We offer students from our global partners dedicated orientation programmes, mentoring schemes, social events, application and visa support, module allocation and pre-arrival information sessions. We recognise the importance of reciprocal inbound mobility to a truly international Exeter and for strengthening new and existing partnerships and support colleagues in the development of partnership opportunities.

Global Partnerships
The Global Partnerships team develops and supports relationships with academic and other institutions around the globe to support research and education objectives in line with the University and Faculty Global Strategies. An overarching objective of all activity is to raise the University’s reputation overseas.
Strategic Partnerships
Global Partnerships supports the tier one strategic partnerships.
This includes the QUEX Institute with the University of Queensland; ENSURE, a joint research centre with the Chinese University of Hong Kong; and Venice International University.
These partnerships exist to develop increased collaboration and publications with leading institutions around the world and to boost Exeter’s global reputation.
Support for research collaborations
The Global Partnerships team support research collaborations at all levels, from individual collaborations, to Faculty level strategic relationships and the wider institutional partnerships.
Support ranges from low level MoUs, facilitating introductions, through to managing joint funding calls and relationships with in country research agencies and ministries.
Support for education collaborations
From collaborative student project, COIL (Collaborative Online Learning), study trips and summer schools through to dual, double and joint degrees, Global Partnerships work with teaching academics to coordinate with colleagues from TQAE, Legal Services and others to establish collaborative education opportunities for students.

Recruitment Partnerships and Transnational Education opportunities
We deliver recruitment through partnerships.
Distinct from the direct recruitment through International Student Recruitment, Global Partnerships works with partners around the world to offer students additional entry pathways to Exeter, particularly for those in countries where their high school certificate does not provide for entry to Year 1 at Exeter, and for those in more price sensitive countries where these pathways provide a more affordable route to a UK education. For example undergraduate ‘articulation’ where students study two years at a partner institution in their home country, which is mapped to ensure this meets the compulsory elements of our Year 1, and enter Exeter in Year 2.
We also support masters level progression and 1+1 degrees, whereby students receive two degrees in two years, which is particularly appealing in countries with two-year masters programmes as standard.
The Global Partnerships team also regularly reviews opportunities for larger scale international education opportunities (known as Transnational Education or TNE), such as joint programmes, joint institutes and branch campuses.
Funding opportunities
Global Partnerships manage a range of matched funding opportunities with partners and other agencies, which provide Exeter academics funding to develop collaborative research with partner academics.
The intention behind these is to provide seed funding which will lead to publication and further externally funded research.
The Global Partnerships team also manages the Faculty mobility funding calls which provide smaller short term funding to support inward and outward academic mobility in support of partnership activity.
Inward and outward visits
Global Partnerships support a number of inward and outward visits and senior level delegations throughout the year.
Global Partnerships also works closely with Research Services, Education and IIB colleagues to ensure that academics are fully supported in their international activities, as well as the ISR and Global Advancement teams.
