To map how the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are integrated across the HASS faculty, this series of visualisations use a keyword methodology. Three stages underpin this methodology:
Stage 1: Keyword Taxonomy and Selection
A comprehensive list of target keywords and their common synonyms was established to represent the core themes of each SDG. The official United Nations definitions and explanations were used to derive four to six primary key words for each SDG. From there, equivalent phrases and synonyms were included in the list to catch variations in terminology.
Example: For SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), ‘food justice’ was a primary keyword while related phrases such as ‘food security’ and ‘food access’ were included as additional synonyms.
Stage 2: Cross-Referencing Module Descriptions
The finalised keyword list was cross-referenced against the module descriptions from the 2025-26 academic year. When a keyword or designated synonym matched the module descriptor text, that specific module was logged as aligning with the corresponding SDG. The use of code and generative AI was used to support the data collection at this stage.
Stage 3: Data Synthesis and Visualisation
The final database identified 1,511 modules across the HASS faculty for the 2025-26 academic year. Of these, 995 modules demonstrated positive SDG alignment. These mapped data points underpin this series of visualisations.
