What is a roadmap?
What is a roadmap?
The main elements in a roadmap are: (1) future vision or target state; (2) current state or situational picture; (3) action plan or strategy to get from the current state to the target state; and (4) time horizon, including dissemination of the roadmap. It is important to outline measurable targets in a roadmap through indicators or measures of success for milestones and the target or vision1.

The main elements in a roadmap are:
- future vision or target state;
- current state or situational picture;
- action plan or strategy to get from the current state to the target state, including specific interventions required to overcome the identified challenges (barriers); and
- time horizon or timeline for these priority actions, and these were explored in our various workshops led by the social sciences team.
This report takes a product-centric approach, focusing specifically on LIB materials as an exemplar for technology metals in the UK. In addition to responsible sourcing and resource efficient strategies for primary raw materials, by promoting various routes of circulation for the LIB materials – such as longer life, repair and maintenance, reuse, repurpose, refurbishment, remanufacturing, and recycling – the UK can reduce its dependence on imported raw materials, become much more efficient in recycling and develop a robust, circular supply chain for critical battery components.
The Social Sciences team led the roadmapping workshops which involved focused events held with 10 to 25 participants, including members of the Met4Tech Technical team. Overall, the participants for these roadmap workshops comprised: academic partner institutions (30%), companies and organisations (52%), and policy partners (18%). Following the stakeholder consultation, the next steps involved Roadmap constructor workshops and internal writing sprints which brought together the multidisciplinary team from across the Met4Tech Centre, and the results of their research, to produce interdisciplinary solutions to the challenges, and to describe the roadmap insights and outcomes.
Overall, the participants for these roadmap workshops comprised:
academic partner institutions
companies and organisations
policy partners.
